How Much Do You Earn?💰 The uncomfortable but necessary question
Issue #18 Of The Chidera Peters Dispatch
Hey friend,
Let’s talk about income for a second — because far too often, we don’t 😅.
In so many of our communities, money talk is taboo. We shy away from sharing our earnings because we’re taught it’s boastful or inappropriate. But what I’ve found is that when we do have open conversations about money — whether it’s salaries, side hustles, or content creation — we start to uncover what’s actually possible.
You realise you might be underpaid for the same role someone else is doing. You find out that someone is making 3x more on the same platform — not because they’re better, but because they knew what to negotiate for or charge. With information comes power. With transparency comes strategy.
At the same time, I understand why some people keep quiet — especially in the digital space. There’s the fear of being judged, having people treat you differently, or suddenly becoming a financial target. It’s a valid fear. But it’s also why I’ve committed to sharing my creator income when I can — especially as a Black African woman building an audience online.
Because let’s be honest: I’ve seen so many white creators freely and openly share their earnings — and it expanded my mindset. I barely saw people who looked like me doing the same, and it made me question whether this kind of success was even possible for us 🤷🏽♀️.
So I share these numbers not to boast, but to inform and empower. To show you a glimpse of what content creation income can look like — even when you’re doing it part-time.

💼 Creator Transparency Corner
Yes, I’m a part-time creator. I have a fully demanding full-time job 😮💨, and content creation happens around the margins of my day — lunch breaks, weekends, and after-work hours. I rarely have the time to actively pitch or chase brand sponsorships, which means a huge chunk of my income is passive or inbound.
So here’s the wild part…
Imagine what the earnings potential could be if I was doing this full time. Operating at full capacity. Focused, consistent, and strategic. The fact that I’m already hitting these numbers tells me one thing: there’s so much more ahead.
So I’m sharing this to show that yes — earning meaningful income from content creation as a Black creator is possible. Even with the disparities, even with fewer brand deals, even when you’re still growing.
Here’s what I made in April from content creation:
Yep — over £7,000 in one month, just from content income. And I’ve officially earned more from content in the first four months of 2025 than I did in the ENTIRE 2024 (mind blown! 🤯). I break it all down in this video.
If you’re a creator or thinking of becoming one, here are 3 key lessons I’ve learned:
🔍 Track everything
Just like with personal finance, knowing what’s working helps you double down. It’s also critical for tax season.
One of the smartest decisions I made as my income grew was setting up a private limited company (Ltd) instead of staying self-employed. This gave me more flexibility and control, and helped me become more tax-efficient — so I keep more of the money I work hard for (side eye to HMRC 🥲).
💡 Diversify your income
Youtube AdSense (ie the payments from Youtube itself) is great, but don’t make it your only play. Whether it’s affiliate links, digital products, consulting, or brand deals — multiple streams have helped me earn consistently and reduced the pressure on one source.
💰 Know your value
Most creators undercharge — especially Black creators, especially Black female creators. There’s a lot of “just be grateful” energy floating around. I used to take anything I was offered. Now? I charge based on value, not vibes. Respect your craft, your time, your audience.
So whether you’re a content creator, a nurse, a software engineer, or a student side hustling — I want to encourage you to ask the uncomfortable but necessary question:
"How much do you earn?"
Within your circle, among peers in your industry, or even anonymously online — start those conversations. Because the truth is, you might be leaving money on the table and not even know it.
